CTIC to Host Tour of Fertilizer BMP Demonstration Sites in Indian Creek Watershed

On July 10th the Conservation Technology Information Center will host the 2012 Indian Creek Watershed Tour; the Indian Creek Watershed Project works with local farmers and interested others to lead a three year-project (2010-2013) to demonstrate and test best conservation practices on Indian Creek Watershed farms. This year, tour participants will visit watershed farms implementing 4R practices to learn about conservation agricultural systems that hold promise for boosting nutrient use efficiency.

The International Plant Nutrition Institute published timely insights into fertilizer use in their seasonal series “Plant Nutrition Today”. Selected articles from that series have been added to the “Implement the 4Rs” section of www.nutrientstewardship.org. “Implement the 4Rs” provides information about fertilizer best management practices to help educate the grower, the service provider, the public and other stakeholders about 4R nutrient management.

Because broad implementation of 4Rs on the farm requires the knowledge and skills of many, part of the 4R outreach effort is to connect with agricultural stakeholders outside of the fertilizer industry. To connect with those individuals, The Fertilizer Institute will staff booths in the trade shows at the upcoming Soil and Water Conservation Society International Annual Conference and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents Annual Meeting.

Recent "Industry Prespective" Published in "Ag Professional" Magazine by Kathy Mathers, TFI Vice President of Publis Affairs - As a communicator, largely about policy and associated legal issues, I welcome the opportunity to serve as a member of The Fertilizer Institute’s (TFI) policy management team. In this role, I am constantly reminded of the critical role that good communication efforts and overarching initiatives play in supporting the Institute’s regulatory and legislative efforts on the fertilizer industry’s behalf.

The 4R Mission

Fertilizer is a component of sustainable crop production systems, and the fertilizer industry recognizes the need to efficiently utilize these nutrients. This site provides science-based information for stakeholders to utilize for education, advocacy, and implementation of crop nutrient stewardship. It provides information on fertilizer best management practices that benefit the environment and the producer’s bottom line. The site is a collaborative effort of the fertilizer industry.

The guidelines for the 4R principles are endorsed and supported by the International Plant Nutrition Institute, The Fertilizer Institute, The Canadian Fertilizer Institute, and the International Fertilizer Industry Association.
